Polk to host Bethany Community in 1A boys soccer playoff opener

Polk County will open the state 1A boys soccer playoffs on Saturday at home against Bethany Community School.

The Wolverines earned the sixth seed in the 1A West bracket released Thursday by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. Polk concluded its season Wednesday with a win over Hendersonville and enters the postseason with a 13-4-3 record.

Bethany Community enters the postseason with an 8-11 record and the 27th seed in the 1A West bracket. The Wolves, who placed sixth in the Northwest Piedmont 1A Conference, lost three of their final four matches in overtime.

Sophomore Chris Long scored 19 goals in 15 games and added 12 assists to lead the Bethany offense.

Should the Wolverines win, they would remain at home on Tuesday and face the winner of Thomas Jefferson and Triad Math and Science.
