CROSS COUNTRY: Huskey earns state trip with 7th-place showing at regional meet

Polk County senior Karsyn Huskey is headed for the 1A state cross country championships.

Huskey finished seventh Saturday in the 1A West Regional held at Kituwah Mound in Bryson City, earning a berth in Saturday’s 1A state meet at Ivey Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville.

Huskey, who placed 13th at last year’s state meet, completed the course in a time of 19:36.68. Swain County standout Arizona Blankenship won the regional meet with a time of 18:00.71.

Polk’s Khloe Kitchen took 74th with a time of 26:43.19 while Kendra Kitchen finished 90th in a time of 30:14.78.

The Wolverine boys team placed 13th, led by senior Davis Young, who finished 17th with a time of 17:55.88. Freshman Liam Jackson followed in 51st with a time of 19:16.27.

Also placing for the Wolverines were Dean Holland (77th, 20:36.42), Ethan Jenne (96th, 22:35.38) and Jayvin Clark (108th, 24:17.39). Austin Shipman (110th, 24:30.23) and Max Butterfield (111th, 24:42.66) also competed for the Wolverines.
