Jim Scott, a distinguished professional and beloved family man, passed away on September 11, 2024, at Autumn Care of Waynesville. Born on November 25, 1936, in Stillwater, Oklahoma, Jim pursued a life marked by achievements in both his career and community involvement.
A proud alumnus of Oklahoma State University, Jim earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering in 1955. He was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He began a successful career at Exxon, where he showcased his leadership abilities, becoming the North Carolina District Manager and eventually attaining the position of Corporate Executive. Following his tenure at Exxon, Jim continued to excel in the corporate world, taking on the role of Group Vice President at Engraph, Inc.
Jim’s dedication extended beyond his professional pursuits. He served in the United States Naval Reserves, embodying a commitment to duty and service that he carried throughout his life. His passion for community engagement was evident in his various leadership roles within the Rotary Club. He served as president of his Charlotte and Tryon, NC Rotary Club, as well as Assistant Governor of the Rotary Western North Carolina District. Jim was also part of the Tryon Town Council. His dedication to service also included active participation in the Sylva Rotary Club. He was also a lifetime member of the Jackson County Genealogy Society.
Throughout his life, Jim has embraced a rich tapestry of interests with enthusiasm and dedication. His passion for tennis and hiking reflects a love for both competitive spirit and the great outdoors, allowing him to stay active and connected with nature. Jim’s deep affection for dogs underscores his nurturing side, showcasing a genuine bond with these loyal companions. Additionally, his engagement with philately and numismatics reveals a keen appreciation for history and the finer details of collecting. Through it all, he was always seen with a warm smile, his large personality shining brightly and leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Jim is survived by his wife of 23 years, Jean Hooper Scott; a daughter, Debra Lynn Tyson and her husband Max; son, David Stuart Scott; two sisters, Jane Crawford and her husband Leroy and Mary Walker and her husband Dale; a brother, John Scott and his wife Barbara; and three cherished grandchildren, Jennifer Tyson, Savannah Tyson, and Lane Alexander and her husband JT. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Carroll Null.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Virginia Swindle Scott and Owen Scott; his first wife, Lynda Null Scott; and brother-in-law, Larry Null; two nephews, Aaron Walker and Brian Beck; a cousin, Pam Scott; his daughter’s in-laws, Brad and Judy Tyson.
Jim Scott will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to his profession, dedication to his family, and passion for community service. His legacy will continue in the hearts of those he touched throughout his remarkable life.
There will be no formal services at this time.
