TRYON—Tryon Concert Association will welcome the Trio Bohémo for the opening presentation of its 2024-2025 season on Tuesday, October 8, at the Tryon Fine Arts Center. The performance will take place at 7:30 p.m.

Trio Bohémo is replacing ATOS Trio, which is currently unable to travel to the United States. 

Trio Bohémo was formed in 2019 by three young Czech musicians. Pianist Jan Vojtek, violinist Matouš Pěruška, and cellist Kristina Vocetková make up the ensemble that is known for “precision, dedication and a spark of magic” (Aulakonzerte Göttingen). The trio has performed at venues across Europe, including the Vienna Musikverein, Wigmore Hall in London, Prague Spring, Schwartzwald Musikfestival in Germany, and Festival van Vlaanderen in Ghent, Belgium. 

The trio’s many prizes and awards include the Weimar International Music Competition in 2022, the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition in 2023, the International Johannes Brahms Competition in Austria, and the International Parkhouse Award in London. One reviewer wrote the ensemble was “on fire” at its Wigmore Hall recital.

The program in Tryon will feature three works. Bedřich Smetana’s Trio No. 1 in G minor for piano, violin, and cello, Op. 15, was inspired by the death of the composer’s young daughter and is a tribute to her life. Poignant and touching, it is a fitting tribute to a beloved child.

Antonin Dvořák’s Piano Trio No. 4 in E minor, Op. 90, B. 166, “Dumky,” is influenced by Bohemian folk music and illustrates Dvořák’s characteristic expression of volatile emotions and sharply contrasting moods. “Dumky” at once reflect joy and melancholy and found their way into many of the composer’s other works.

Paul Schoenfield’s Café Music is described by the composer as “a kind of high-class dinner music” and draws on early 20th-century American, Viennese, gypsy, and Broadway styles. With humor and imagination, the music takes the listener on a jovial evening out.
