Huskey breaks 20-minute mark in pacing Polk runners at Freedom Invitational

Karsyn Huskey raced to the second-fastest time of her career Saturday, heading Polk County’s efforts at the Freedom Invitational cross country meet in Morganton.

Huskey placed second in the Girls Championship race with a timeof 19:49.7. It is the second sub-20 minute finish of her career, and she remains just one of seven female runners in school history to break that barrier.

Huskey finished behind Stella Friedman of North Carolina School of Science & Math-Morganton, who won the race in 19:37.8. Polk’s Emily-Charlie Keller finished in 28:29.1, with Kendra Kitchen crossing in 29:26.4.

The Wolverine boys placed 15th in the 17-team field, with Brevard taking top honors over Owen and North Iredell. Senior Davis Young led Polk with an 18th-place finish in a time of 17:49.7.

Liam Jackson followed in 18:36.6, with Dean Holland finishing in 20:38.7, Jayvin Clark in 22:51.7 and Austin Shipman in 24:06.2. Also competing for the Wolverines were Ethan Jenne (24:21.1) and Max Butterfield (27:09.5).
