Inaugural competition hosted by TDDA

TRYON—The Tryon Downtown Development Association hosted the inaugural “BBQ Beatdown” on Saturday evening, bringing barbecue enthusiasts and foodies together for a flavorful showdown. Held on McCown Street, the competition was free to enter and continued the rich tradition of BBQ competitions in the area.

Attendees were treated to a tasting from 4 to 6 p.m., trying free samples of each competitor’s creations and casting votes for their favorites. Each vote cost one dollar, and the proceeds benefited the TDDA and the Tryon Fire Alliance. Seven entries for meat and four for cornbread were featured during the competition, with Tryon resident Steve Nelon emerging as the overall winner and claiming the championship belt.

Marty Kirchhof won the title for best cornbread, while Bill Crowell and Dave Goss won first place in People’s Choice. Steve Nelon placed second in that category, with Steven Siler placing third.

The prizes for the runner-ups included tickets for the upcoming Beerfest, spices and rubs, cast iron skillets, and gift cards to local businesses.

“It’s so lovely to see such a tremendous turnout and for everyone to be able to get out and enjoy delicious BBQ and this beautiful day,” said competitor Clara Glaze, who was serving up brisket at the event.

TDDA Director Lourdes Gutierrez said that she, Steven Siler, and Tim Daniels had the idea to bring more free, fun food events to downtown Tryon.

“It was a smaller event, which was probably good because it was more manageable,” she said. “And seeing such a positive reaction from the town is great.”

The TDDA announced its next 4th Friday event, which will take place on September 27, will feature the band Mercury Rising performing at the Plaza from 5 to 7 p.m.

The BBQ Beatdown was sponsored by the Tryon Bottle and its owner, Della Pullara.
