Smokey Bear’s 80th Birthday Reading Challenge

Did you know? Smokey Bear turned 80 years old this year! Celebrate his milestone birthday by joining the Smokey Bear Reading Challenge at Polk County Public Libraries. This challenge is designed for ages 4-10, but all are welcome to participate. Pick up a packet at Columbus Library or Saluda Library, read books and complete challenges through October 31st, and bring your completed challenge card back to the library in November for a prize. Below are some of the suggested children’s books on the reading list.

Join the Earth Patrol! Written to help parents begin conversations with their children about a challenging and important topic, this book describes the narrator’s efforts to help the planet with her friends, by advocating for reusable plates at her school. This book will inspire kids to make a difference in their own schools and communities.
