VOLLEYBALL: Polk tunes up for key MF7 clash with sweep of East Rutherford

Polk County rolled to a 3-0 win Thursday over East Rutherford in a Mountain Foothills 7 Conference home match.
Tuning up for Tuesday’s conference showdown with Brevard, the Wolverines improved to 9-2 overall, 5-0 in league play with the 25-11, 25-18, 25-17 victory. East Rutherford dropped to 8-7 overall, 0-6 in conference matches.
The Wolverines scored the first five points of the match, then reeled off seven straight points to take a 14-3 lead. Polk closed the opening set on a Morgan Yoder kill of a free ball at the net and a Naomi Martinez ace.
Polk trailed 7-4 early in the second set, and the teams were still tied at 12 before a Mia Bradley kill and service run put the Wolverines up 16-12. At 18-16, with Morgan Yoder serving, the Wolverines reeled off five straight points, capped by an Akeela Cunningham kill, and soon closed the set on a Bradley blast.
The third set followed a similar pattern, with the teams tied at 12-12 before Polk pushed ahead and closed the match on a Yoder kill.
Bradley finished with 14 kills and 16 digs, with Yoder adding 12 kills, four aces and seven digs. Cunningham had three kills and seven digs, Lexi Beiler had three kills and Charley Dusenbury sprinkled in three kills with her 32 assists.
Hayden Blackwell finished with 12 kills and Reeve Carroll added nine.
Polk will host Brevard on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in a matchup of defending state champions and current conference co-leaders.
