The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday that it was aware of recent threats made to schools through various social media platforms. In response, the Sheriff’s Office, in coordination with its School Resource Division, took swift and decisive action, charging several students across the county in connection with these threats.
Unfortunately, since the recent tragedy in Georgia, some individuals have taken to social media to spread fear and disrupt schools across the nation. The Sheriff’s Office asks parents and guardians to help by having conversations with their students to explain the seriousness of threats to schools and of adding to the circulation of rumors. It is helpful for students to report concerning information directly to law enforcement and school administration but not to post, alter, or repost them on social media.
In a statement, SCSO said that every threat will be thoroughly investigated to ensure the security of our schools and the safety of all students, staff, and community members.
“Children are society’s most precious resource, and their safety is of the utmost importance,” said Sheriff Chuck Wright. “We are unwavering in our commitment to protecting our schools and maintaining a safe environment for learning.”
The Sheriff’s Office is working closely with school administrators and parents to address any concerns, and encourages the community to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious activity near any campus.
SCSO will continue to monitor all threats and take necessary action to safeguard the students of Spartanburg County.
