Polk County’s band played its Dreams and Nightmares show at halftime Thursday, and that also seemed a pretty good summary of the two quarters that preceded it.

Very little went the Wolverines’ way in the first half of their annual matchup with Landrum. The visiting Cardinals scored on their first six possessions, building a 43-0 halftime lead en route to a 43-6 win in G.M. Tennant Stadium.

The rain that forced the game to be played a day earlier than usual arrived just before kickoff, dampening the festive pregame mood that soon turned sour anyway for Polk County.

The Wolverines (1-3) had the first scoring chance of the night, reaching the Landrum 17 on Gunnar Alm’s 56-yard pass to Aaron Dickey on the Wolverines’ opening possession. But the drive stalled at the 15, and a low snap helped spoil Billy Booker’s 32-yard field goal attempt.

It was all Landrum (3-1) from that point until halftime.

  • Titus Poore capped an 80-yard drive with a 19-yard touchdown run.
  • Following a Polk fumble, Ty Foster hit Micah McClintock with a 23-yard touchdown pass.
  • Facing a 3rd-and-8 at the Landrum 22, Foster found McClintock racing down the left sideline, and the sophomore hauled in the pass near midfield and outraced Polk’s secondary to the end zone to make it 21-0 with 43 seconds left in the first quarter.
  • A high snap over Alm’s head led to a Landrum safety early in the second quarter.
  • Foster’s 24-yard pass to Kirby Gentry set up Cente Williams for a 1-yard touchdown plunge.
  • Foster broke free and sprinted 78 yards to the end zone with 3:05 left in the half.
  • Foster’s 40-yard pass to AJ Lindsey set up Poore for a 4-yard scoring plunge with 20 seconds remaining before halftime.

Six touchdown drives, 350 total yards.

With a running clock for the entire second half, plays were limited, but Polk County – which remains winless all-time in Thursday games – still made the best of it, with Donte Tingling turning a short pass from Alm into a 58-yard catch-and-run touchdown with 8:33 remaining.

Polk County will be off next Friday thanks to Patton’s decision not to play varsity football this season. The Wolverines are next in action on Sept. 27, making their Mountain Foothills 7 Conference debut at Hendersonville.
