My sister Rebecca Davis passed away on September 3, 2024, after many years of fighting different cancers. She was an amazing aunt to her nieces and nephews. Those of you who know Moira Davis know that they traveled together everywhere. Rebecca expanded Moira‘s world every day. They were involved in theater productions, they went to the library, and they went to knitting retreats and the beach. What you may not know is Rebecca taught Moira to talk! She used to only communicate by writing things down until she was in her twenties because her speech was difficult to understand, but Becky could always understand her. When she moved in with Becky, she got new hearing aids, and Becky became her everyday speech therapist. Becky insisted that she used her words until we could all understand her. She taught her to be independent and do things like make her own lunch, etc. She taught her knitting skills, sewing skills, drawing—any kind of craft.
Rebecca also had her own restaurant in Landrum. She was a wonderful chef, especially a great pastry chef/ baker. If you got a cake from Rebecca, you were a very lucky person because it was the best cake ever. I’m sure some of you still remember the wonderful Hunt breakfasts and parties she catered for her dear friend Trip Hoffman. She would work so hard to make sure everything was perfect for him and his guests.
Another thing you may not know about Rebecca is that, at one time, she was a fabulous ballroom dancer who would go to contests around the region and make her own beautiful dance outfits. She was ahead of her time in her own “dancing with the stars.”
Rebecca has lived in Charleston, Seabrook, Chicago, France, Washington, D.C., and the Tryon area.
When Becky became too sick for her catering business, she donated many of her supplies to the library so that other people could check them out and use them. Rebecca traveled the world with her parents, Margaret and Seth Davis. She loved to travel. When our father, Seth, passed away in 2015, it was devastating to our family and, of course, Rebecca. She lived with my parents most of her life. Seth was the rock that held us together.
Rebecca had many talents, like many of her relatives before her- she was constantly knitting, rug hooking, painting, baking, and working on new projects. Toward the end of her life, her circle became very small. She was so tired of fighting the diseases and the horrible cancer that took away her ability to talk, breathe, and eat.
We will all celebrate the great things about Rebecca/Aunt Becky and know that, like many of my relatives who have lived in Tryon, her contributions to the community have been many. Her love and devotion to Margaret, Michael and Dawn Davis, Moira, Hunter, Talon, Heather, Amy, Neal, and all their children will never be forgotten. These are just a few of my memories and I want to make sure that everyone knows what a good person she was and that her life at the end was so very difficult.
Thank you to all the friends over the years who provided meals, transportation, and support during her many cancer treatments—Chemo and radiation. I see you, and I know how much you loved her.
My brother John devoted himself to caring for her every minute in her final months. It is an amazing gift to have only family and not strangers taking care of you. Thank you so much, John.
If you know Moira, she will need your support. Maybe there are activities she loves, and you could help her continue to participate or attend them. I know Becky’s knitting group has been an amazing support for her and Moira.
These are just a few things that I wanted you to know about Becky. If you are close to me, you know I loved and cared for her the best I could in difficult situations.
Thank you Tryon friends. I miss Tryon. My twin sister Cathy and I will remember the fun and sometimes crazy things about our childhood with Becky and the rest of us growing up on a farm in Columbus after moving here from the suburbs of Chicago in 1969. So many funny memories. Tryon was a great place to grow up.
I loved my sister; her suffering is over, and she is with Daddy and all her kitties in Heaven.
