Polk County’s bid to repeat as state 1A volleyball champions took an unexpected hit Tuesday.
Senior outside hitter Sophia Overholt, the Most Valuable Player in last season’s state final, suffered a knee injury during the Wolverines’ 3-0 win at R-S Central that likely will sideline her for the remainder of the season, according to head coach Molly Hill.
Overholt is expected to miss a minimum of 6-8 weeks, Hill said, though it could be longer if surgery is required. The regular season ends Oct. 10, with the state 1A playoffs beginning Oct. 19.
“Sophia is a tough kid, and we are devastated to see her hurting,” Hill said. “We are hoping and praying that she heals quickly and can rejoin us back on the court as soon as possible. Her health comes first, and I definitely want her to take care of herself and get better as she has a bright future ahead of her with high school volleyball and college volleyball.
“She is a tremendous athlete and a huge part of our team, but I know that my team this year will continue to fight and play hard, now especially, with her in mind.”
Overholt, who committed earlier this year to continue her career at USC Upstate, recorded 72 kills and 117 digs in the Wolverines’ first seven games, providing key production both offensively and defensively. She surpassed 1,000 career digs in last year’s 1A West Regional final and was on track to also reach 1,000 career kills.
Even without Overholt, Polk still offers a lineup capable of making a repeat run at a state crown. Senior Mia Bradley shares the team lead in kills with Overholt, with senior Morgan Yoder just behind both. Bradley and Hayden Blackwell are second and third on the team in digs. Overholt’s loss could mean more playing time for seniors Kylie Lewis and Lexi Beiler as well as junior Akeela Cunningham.
Polk County (6-1) is set to play Wednesday evening at West Henderson.
