New program series to foster discussion on embracing change while preserving the past

SALUDA—The Historic Saluda Committee recently launched a new program series titled “Preserving Saluda.” This series of programs and listening sessions will be offered free of charge. The programs will be informative and give community members an opportunity to voice opinions in an open and friendly environment.

The first program will focus on “Historic Preservation 101,” featuring Jack Thomson with Preservation NC. After Thomson’s presentation, organizers will offer attendees a chance to speak and share their input. The event will take place on Saturday, September 14, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Saluda Public Library.

Immediately after, the Historic Saluda Committee will invite attendees to an open house with refreshments at 443 Shand St. in Saluda. Built in 1885, the house is a prime example of a historic property that deserves to be protected, organizers say. The open house is sponsored by Allen Tate Realtors-Saluda.

“Change is inevitable, and our world is changing fast, too fast at times,” says Historic Saluda Committee Chair Cindy Stephenson Tuttle. “Though Saluda may be a little slower to change, there has been a lot of change over the years. We are now bracing for even more change to come. Most of us want to preserve ‘Saluda Time’ and the general sense that Saluda gives us.”

Tuttle says the committee has collected oral histories from Saluda’s citizens and “summer folks” for the past 15 years, many of whom are no longer living.

“There is one question that we always end the interviews with, and that is, ‘What advice would you give the newcomers to Saluda?’” Tuttle says. “You came here because you liked it, so why do you want to change it? How do we embrace change while also embracing our past?”

Tuttle says the committee looks forward to sharing opportunities and ideas. For more information, she can be reached via email at historicsaluda@gmail.com.
