SUNNY VIEW—Fifth graders in Stephanie Blanton’s class at Sunny View Elementary recently discussed the scientific method and then put it into action.
Students used up to five straws, rubber bands, and masking tape to create a contraption that would protect an egg from breaking when dropped from a specific height.
On the first trial, eggs were dropped onto the grass and all survived. During the second trial, only four eggs survived the concrete drop. On the final trial, the eggs were dropped by the teacher and only two managed to remain intact.
Students not only had a lot of fun but learned about creating a cushion to absorb the impact and how to test a hypothesis.
