Tryon—On Saturday, Aug. 17, The Honorable Dr. Joseph Crystal Armbrust passed away quietly in his sleep. He was surrounded by numerous friends as they shared memories, stories, and admiration.

Renowned polymath, mentor to many, friend and confidant to countless, composer and organist extraordinaire, tireless promoter of the Town of Tryon, and relentless preservationist of the legacy of Nina Simone, Crys’s impact on both individuals and entire communities is simply incalculable.

Born in Florence, S.C., and raised in Sumter, S.C., Crys was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Shelby Jean Armbrust. Dr. Armbrust’s sister, Tamelia Wagner, is his sole surviving relative, although so endeared by many who truly considered him a brother.

Following his father’s footsteps into music, Dr. Armbrust eventually took over for his elder as Music Director at Holy Cross Church in Tryon; only after receiving two PhDs in literature at the University of South Carolina, where he served as professor and Asst. Principal of the exclusive Preston College there.

His musical talents led to countless choral compositions, including numerous works for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth as well as the Vatican.

Once permanently established in Tryon, Dr. Armbrust aggressively sought to preserve the legacy of local legend Dr. Nina Simone while driving some of the most substantial business development in the history of the town.

Appropriate recognition festivities are being planned and will be communicated at the earliest opportunity.

In the meantime, in lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made in his name to the Nina Simone Project, where a special fund is being established in his honor.
