POLK COUNTY—At times Thursday, it didn’t feel like the first week of volleyball season.
Polk County didn’t always play perfectly, but the Wolverines also looked very much in sync for most of its 3-0 sweep of T.C. Roberson in a non-conference home match.
Polk (2-0) kept its home debut largely drama-free, rolling to a 25-11, 25-13, 25-13 victory over the 4A Rams (0-2). The Wolverines had three players with double-digit kills in controlling the match from the outset.
“First week of the season, I’m very pleased,” said Polk County head coach Molly Hill. “I thought that we had two really strong wins against schools that were bigger than us (TCR and A.C. Reynolds).
“We’re starting off strong and setting the tone. There are things we need to work on, of course. Luckily, those are things that are fixable on our side of the net.”
After taking the first set, Polk raced to a 12-0 lead in the second set, sparked by Morgan Yoder’s serving. Yoder also shone at the net with 10 kills, with Sophia Overholt also recording 10 kills and Kylie Lewis posting a team-high 11 kills.
Hill was able to rotate in her entire lineup and also experiment with moving players around to different spots on the floor. That’s all part of trying to forget what worked in last year’s run to the state 1A championship and focus on this season and finding the keys to success.
“I think it’s definitely in their minds and it’s a goal for this year, but they are 100 percent focused on this year,” Hill said. “And that’s what I’m trying to do, too.”
Mia Bradley added six kills and had 12 digs, with Overholt recording 11 digs. Hayden Blackwell had a team-high 15 digs. Lewis had eight digs and Yoder added six.
Charley Dusenbury finished with 34 assists.
Polk County will return home on Tuesday, hosting Crest in another non-conference battle.
