Armbrust’s decision to withdraw from the race stems from several lingering health issues and obligations to Nina Simone projects and music composition. His work schedule is set to lead him overseas to cities such as Paris and London.

Serving two terms as Tryon Commissioner and seven years as Economic Development Director, Armbrust has a list of accomplishments in the community. Armbrust played a major role in completing the 2001 Streetscape plan, creating the Nina Simone Plaza and successfully facilitating the rehabilitation of many buildings in Tryon, including the childhood home of Nina Simone.

“I take phenomenal pride in having served the town of Tryon, and its citizens, for eight years as commissioner and seven years as Economic Development Director,” said Armbrust on Monday. “I thank the Tryon community for allowing me to serve and allowing me to use my skill sets to enhance the quality of life in this bit of paradise where we are so fortunate to live, to work, and to play.”

With Armbrust withdrawing from the Tryon commissioner election, that leaves Steve Nelon, Tracie Greenway Morris, Ray Fulk, Skip Crowe and Ian Griggs running for two spots on the Tryon Board of Commissioners. Julie Lambakis, Nathan Shields, and Neil Rogers are contending for an unexpired seat made open due to Bill Ingham’s passing.
