George Comparetto, age 86, of Tryon, NC, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2024. He was born in Brooklyn, NY, on February 11, 1938, the son of the late Leonard George and Alva McKinney Comparetto. 

George grew up and was educated in Washington, DC. He was an Eagle Scout and served as Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster for 40+ years. He served six years in the United States Air Force (1959-1965) and retired after 38 years from C & P Telephone Company (Bell Atlantic). George was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many leadership callings in the Church.

After retiring from his second career as Field Engineer for Power Maintenance International, George and his wife Judy moved from the Washington, DC, area to their current home. George was a member of the Polk County Historical Association and served for many years as Curator of the PCHA Museum, first in the Tryon Depot, then in its current location in Columbus, NC. Twice, George was appointed to the Polk County Board of Elections. He was also active in the Polk County Republican Party. 

George’s hobbies included stamp collecting, motorcycle riding, and automobile rebuilding, particularly his beloved “Bessie,” a 1941 Dodge convertible (his first car). George loved the Lord, his family, and his Country. 

Survivors include his wife, Judy Kay Holmes Comparetto, son George Scott Comparetto, daughter-in-law Mary Ann Comparetto, seven grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents and sister, Jean Marie Comparetto Weaver.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, 2024, at McFarland Funeral Chapel in Tryon, NC, with Bishop Dale Workman officiating. 

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Burial will be in Saluda City Cemetery, Saluda, NC, following the service. 

Military honors will be provided by the Polk County Veteran’s Memorial Honor Guard.

Memorials may be made to Elizabeth House, Flat Rock, NC.
