Columbus– Elizabeth (Betty) Winkel died peacefully at Tryon Estates on May 26, 2024.
Betty was born on January 5, 1925, in Scranton, PA to the late Hubert and Helene Winkel. The family moved to Cranford, NJ where Betty grew up and graduated from Bucknell University with a BA in Biology and Chemistry. Betty went onto Yale University in CT where she graduated with her Master’s Degree in Nursing. Betty then moved to Michigan where she earned her Master’s Degree in Public Health Nursing. Betty worked as a public health nurse for over 30 years while living in Ann Arbor Michigan and pursuing her passion for horses and dogs.
When Betty retired in 1994, she moved her two horses and two corgis to Columbus, NC, where she designed and built her new home and barn and continued her riding passion and learning all about the corgi breed. Betty fell in love with the sport of dog agility and competed with her corgis for over 25 years.
Betty moved to Tryon Estates in 2021 and continued her interests in reading, listening to classical music, and enjoying spectator golf on TV along with playing bingo.
Betty is survived by her nieces, Berri Winkel Lowman and Elizabeth Winkel Craig, and nephew William B Winkel. Her Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Sara was recently adopted and lives on a farm with children and another corgi.
Per her wishes, no services are planned.
