COLUMBUS—The Polk County Health and Human Services Agency’s Meals on Wheels program is urgently seeking volunteer drivers to meet the growing demand for meal deliveries to homebound individuals in the community.

As the number of homebound individuals in need of meal assistance continues to rise, the Meals on Wheels program is struggling to keep pace with demand due to a shortage of volunteer drivers. With many existing drivers facing increased time constraints and other commitments, the program is in desperate need of additional volunteers to ensure that all recipients receive the nourishment they depend on.

“We are facing a critical shortage of volunteer drivers, which is hindering our ability to reach all those who rely on our services,” said Gail Dyer, Nutrition Coordinator of the Polk County Meals on Wheels program. “Our current drivers are dedicated and passionate, but we simply do not have enough of them to meet the growing demand.”

Volunteer drivers play a vital role in the Meals on Wheels program, delivering nutritious meals to homebound individuals and providing valuable social interaction and companionship. For many recipients, the visit from a Meals on Wheels driver may be the only human contact they have all day, making the role of volunteers even more essential.

“We’re not just delivering meals; we’re delivering smiles, companionship, and a sense of connection to those who may otherwise feel isolated and alone,” added Dyer. “By volunteering as a driver, you have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, while also experiencing the fulfillment that comes from serving your community.”

The Polk County Meals on Wheels program is actively recruiting volunteers to join its team of dedicated drivers. Volunteers must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and a willingness to commit to regular delivery shifts. Training and support will be provided to all volunteers to ensure they feel confident and prepared in their roles.
