Philip Eugene (Gene) Morehead, 88, of Tryon, NC died on April 23, 2024. He was the son of the late Lester Cox Morehead and Eleanor Frierson Morehead.
Gene was predeceased by his beautiful wife of 56 years Wyndham (Wyndy) McCall Morehead and sister Dorothy Morehead Evans. He is survived by his daughter Eleanor Norfleet Morehead Baugnies, son George Ferrier McCall Morehead (Melissa), and four grandchildren; Sylvain Philip Baugnies de Saint Marceaux, Isabelle Wyndham Baugnies de Saint Marceaux, Page Morehead Caggiano (Nick) and George Ferrier McCall Morehead Jr and brother Lester Cox Morehead Jr (Deborah).
Gene was born and raised in Shreveport, L, and later graduated from Tulane University, where he was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. After graduation, he remained in New Orleans before moving to Tryon, NC in 2007.
Once retired, Gene dedicated his time to serving as the Director of Alliance Francaise de la Nouvelle Orleans. He served on the Civil Service Boards of both the Mandeville, LA Police and the Municipal Employees, as well as the Vestries of Trinity Episcopal Church in New Orleans and St. Michaels Episcopal Church in Mandeville, LA. He was also a member of the Boston Club of New Orleans and several Carnival Organizations.
He loved his family (especially his grandchildren), traveling, history, elephants and collecting rare specimen sea shells. He was especially proud of his heritage as a descendant of Martha Washington Custis.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 29, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Tryon, NC. A reception to celebrate Gene’s life will be held at a later date in New Orleans.
