Polk County added to its list of regional qualifiers Tuesday with its efforts at the WHKP Invitational at North Henderson.

The long-running meet, formerly known as the WHKP Relays, drew a field of 11 schools from around the area, competing on a warm April afternoon.

Polk County’s girls finished sixth, with West Henderson dominating the team competition, while the Wolverine boys placed ninth. West Henderson also won the boys team title, finishing seven points ahead of Brevard.

It proved another outstanding day for Polk junior Karsyn Huskey, who won the 800-meter run and helped the Wolverine 4×400-meter relay team record a win, joining with Thais Vorbe, Sophia Overholt and Louisa Wood to post a time of 4:26.41, lowering the team’s best for this season.

For the second time in four days, Mia Bradley tied Hendersonville’s Emory Freeman for the top spot in the high jump, losing a tiebreaker. Leah Dotson cleared 8-0 to finish second in the pole vault while Akeela Cunningham placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 30-7, that bettering the qualifying mark for the 1A West Regional.

Aaron Dickey’s win in the long jump led the day for the Polk boys, with Cade Bright’s time of 2:08.92 in the 800-meter run qualifying him for the 1A regional.

Loreynzo Sanchez took third in the 110-meter hurdles.

Polk County is next scheduled to compete on May 1, hosting the Mountain Foothills 7 Conference Championships.
