Katharine Marie Janes died 4 March 2024 in Providence, Rhode Island after a long, courageous fight with breast cancer. She was 59. Katharine was one of six children of longtime Tryon residents Capt. William E. Janes, USN and Judith (Moy) Janes. Katharine studied at Rhode Island College and University of North Carolina Asheville with majors in Studio Art and Primary Education. A lifelong learner, her passions were painting, interior decorating, dance, and teaching youngsters. Until April 2023, Katharine lived in Tryon, NC and taught at Tuesday School, as well as volunteering for a number of local organizations. Predeceased by her parents and sister Nancy, she is survived by her husband Paul Petrarca, her daughter Lily (Quinn) Kelley; her beloved grandchildren Diana, Charlie, and Will Kelley; her sisters Liz and Judith Anne, and her brothers Matthew and Peter. Katharine’s memorial service took place on April 6th in Rhode Island. Donations in Katharine’s name may be made to Breast Cancer Research Foundation (bcrf.org).
