TRYON—Downtown Tryon was packed on Saturday for the return of the April Fools’ Day festivities, which included live music, a parade, the ‘Trashion Show,’ and of course, the Outhouse Race. Last held in 2018, the event was sponsored by the Tryon Downtown Development Association
Led by Parade Grand Marshal Alex Schweizer, the parade featured various organizations decked out in their wackiest attire, as well as Toby, the Dog Mayor of Tryon, local gymnasts, Mayor Peoples and race participants.
The Outhouse Race was won by Pete Veihman and company, with Team Shrek and the third team close behind. All three teams seem to have perfected the art of crafting mobile outhouses for the occasion, and eventgoers were delighted by the oddball event.
“I’ve never seen anything like it!” said Blake Allison, who is a bit too young to remember previous outhouse races along Trade Street. “This was awesome!”
Large crowds also gathered at the Depot Plaza for the ‘Trashion Show,’ where participants donned recycled materials to create absurd apparel. The celebration also featured an Adopt-A-Dog event from the Foothills Humane Society.
A scavenger hunt led participants into various downtown businesses to try and spot hidden Morris the Horse figurines, giving them a chance to claim one of three different April Fools’ Day ornaments as a prize. The Rich Nelson Band also performed live music at the event, providing good vibes for the celebration of silliness.
“We were lucky to have perfect weather for today’s event,” said TDDA Executive Director Lourdes Gutierrez. “We’re so happy to see all these smiling faces here in downtown Tryon!”
