As the temperature cooled Monday evening, Polk County’s offense seemed to strike with more fire.

And by night’s end in G.M. Tennant Stadium, it was downright chilly.

The Wolverines turned a tight match at halftime into a runaway win, scoring six second-half goals to top Landrum 7-0 in a non-conference clash of border rivals.

Polk County (2-1-3) largely kept Landrum (1-4) from mounting serious offensive challenges, keeping the ball in its end of the pitch for much of the evening. But after allowing an early goal to Gabby Savaia, the Cardinal defense also kept Polk at bay the rest of the opening half, though the Wolverines did have a couple of scoring chances that just went awry.

All that changed in the second half.

Charley Dusenbury struck for Polk less than five minutes into the half, winning a scramble in front of the net and poking in a loose ball for a 2-0 advantage.

Some eight minutes later, Caroline Taylor was fouled in the upper half of the penalty area. Jessica Baird took the penalty and hammered a drive into the upper left corner of the net for a 3-0 Polk lead.

Savaia and Taylor teamed for the Wolverines’ next goal, with Savaia playing a perfect pass forward that Taylor ran onto and drove into the upper half of goal for a 4-0 bulge. Savaia then made it 5-0, intercepting a Landrum pass and pushing deep into the right side of the box before slipping a shot just inside the left post.

Elena Carroll made it 6-0 with 11:14 remaining, arching a long free kick just under the crossbar. Baird then closed the scoring in the 71st minute.

Polk’s Maggie McCammon and Maggie Johnson teamed on the shutout in goal.

The win came in the first of three home matches this week for Polk County.
