Tryon— Carol “Grandma and Nana” Anne Schlegel, 87, passed away on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at Tryon Estates in Columbus, NC. Carol was the daughter of the late Harold and Edna Mills. Born in Youngstown, OH, she was raised in Richmond, IN. Carol graduated from Richmond High School in 1954 and from Earlham College in 1958 with a Bachelor of Psychology. She met her late husband Don Schlegel in Schenectady, NY and they were married 58 years until Don’s passing in 2017. She had dual careers as a homemaker and as a 2nd grade teacher at Bethany Lutheran School in Waynesboro, VA. Carol was an active member of every church she attended and in every community she lived. She was a talented seamstress making clothing for her and her children. She loved multiple crafts including cross stitch, and knitting…, and was a talented piano player and singer.
Carol is survived by her two sons, Mark Schlegel (Colleen) of Milton, GA, and John Schlegel (Maryrose) of Deep Creek Lake, MD; her daughter, Beth Schlegel of San Antonio, TX and four grandchildren, Alex, Austin, Michaela, and Kyle; one brother, Walter Mills (Joanne) of Bloomington, IN; two sisters-law, Dorothea Tesch and Karen Baier of Armor, SD; one brother-in-law, Byron Park (Betty) of Richmond, IN and numerous nephews and nieces. Carol was predeceased by her sister, Betty Park.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 23, 2024, at Tryon Estates in Columbus, NC with Reverend Allan Purtill and Reverend Charles Drawdy officiating.
