Council considers structure, terms and functions of new advisory board

 

LANDRUM—At the Landrum City Council’s regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, March 12, the council discussed the appointment of a new Rail and History Museum Board. 

Councilwoman Judy Henderson composed a list of possible appointees for the board, which will take on numerous responsibilities such as managing volunteers and presenting reports to the City Council. 

“They’ll have no financial responsibility, but they will be advisory to the City Council and they’ll give an annual report to the board,” explained City Administrator Rich Caplan. “Formal decisions that have to be made about the museum, financial or otherwise will be made by the City Council.”

The list of candidates included marketing professional Ezekiel Carzella, who works remotely for National Positions, a multinational marketing company; Emma Chelle, a librarian at Appalachian State University, and Landrum’s own Carol Browning, a past-president of the Rotary Club. 

Henderson and fellow councilmember Billy Inman may also serve on the board, or if not, act as liaisons between the board and the council. Neither the Rail and History Museum Board members nor its volunteers will be required to be Landrum citizens.

“I’m really excited that we have some people that have come forward saying they’d like to be on this museum board,” said Henderson. 

The council also discussed whether or not board members will serve two or four year terms, or if they will serve indefinitely. If the council decides on limited terms, the board members will most likely need to be reappointed if they’re still interested in staying in the position once their term is up.

The Landrum City Council will make formal resolutions outlining the duties of the new board and the final number of board members and their meeting in April.
