TRYON—Tryon Fine Arts Center continues the Love Stories film series with the French New Wave romantic drama Jules et Jim on Tuesday, March 12. Showtimes are at 2 p.m. (matinee), with a second showing at 7 p.m.
Jules et Jim was produced, directed and co-written by François Truffaut in 1962. It tells the story of a love triangle and is set in France, Germany and Austria in the years before and during the First World War.
Although the title is given to the two male characters in the film (Jules, played by Oskar Werner, and Jim played by Henri Serre), in the threesome it is the third character, Catherine, performed by Jeanne Moreau who plays the dominant role in the film. It is a complex story of romance and conflict, humor and tragedy that captivated audiences of the 1960s and maintains its relevance to today.
The film received numerous awards including the French Étoile de Cristal and the Danish Bodil award, and was nominated for the BAFTA Best Film From Any Source award. Moreau also received a nomination for BAFTA’s Best Foreign Actress prize, while Truffaut received Best Director awards from both Italy and Argentina. The musical score by George Delerue, was cited as a “dominant element in the film” by New York Times film critic Bosley Crowther.
According to the British film magazine Shortlist, the French New Wave movement and Jules et Jim in particular, were influential on American films, especially Martin Scorsese’s acclaimed 1990 film GoodFellas.
The Tryon Fine Arts Center Box Office opens at 1:30 p.m. for the 2 o’clock matinee and at 6:30 p.m. for refreshments and time to meet up with friends before the evening show. For more information about this film series and other events at TFAC visit tryonarts.org or call 828.859.8322.
