Performances to take place in Landrum, Tryon and Asheville
TRYON—Shakespeare & Friends, a local theater production company, has two exciting upcoming projects.
The first is “New Shorts,” an evening of original one-act plays presented in a “reader’s theater format,” directed by Catherine Gillet. Reader’s theater is a style of theater in which the actors present dramatic readings of narrative material without any costumes, props, scenery or special lighting, reading directly from scripts. Tickets for “New Shorts” are currently sold out.
“New Shorts” will be held in the Tryon Depot Room located at 22 Depot St, on Saturday, February 17 at 7:30 p.m.
The second project is “The Ides,” a 21st-century portrayal of Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar,” directed by Michelle Newman. The performance will be shown at the Landrum Depot, located at 211 N. Trade Ave., from Wednesday, March 13, through Friday, March 15. Additional shows will be at The Hideaway on Broadway St. in Asheville from Thursday, March 21, through Saturday, March 23. All shows begin at 7:30 p.m.
“The production is currently in rehearsals and promises to be an intense and engaging theatrical experience,” said writer and actor Darlene Cah.
“I can attest to ‘The Ides’ dynamic creativity and super-talented cast,” said actor Andy Millard. “I am playing roles in a couple of the New Shorts pieces, and those are lots of fun. It’s going to be a fun evening of original works new to Tryon, with some plays never having been staged before.”
Tickets for “The Ides” will be $15 for adults and $10 for students, and will be available at shakespeare-friends.com. Proceeds from both productions will go to support Shakespeare & Friends Main Stage productions.
