First formed in 1984, the Foothills Equestrian Nature Center is a non-profit organization that was built around an original land grant of 117 acres generously contributed by the Mahler family, who came to Tryon in the 1920s. Since then, FENCE has grown to its present 384 acres and serves thousands of people each year with programs featuring nature study, outdoor recreation and equestrian competition.

“The Foothills Equestrian Nature Center’s mission is to serve as a community resource for the preservation of green space and educational and recreational opportunities linking nature, animals and people,” said Executive Director Tracie Hanson. “We achieve our mission by providing facilities, recreation and education for the community while honoring the land, protecting the environment and managing our natural areas for all to enjoy.”

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office will have K9 demos and vehicles on display. Polk EMS, the Landrum and Columbus Fire Departments, NC Forestry Service, NC Wildlife, Polk Parks and Rec. and Polk Libraries will also be featured at the event.

There is a still currently growing list of local businesses that will make appearances as well, such as Jackson’s Towing, Holbert Grading and Excavating, Dream Winds, Vibes Massage, Miss Tammy’s, Foothills Humane Society, The Hope Chest, KNL Mobile Detailing, P3, Cooper-Riis, Thermal Belt Outreach, Red Bell Run, TFAC and Green Creek Hounds. The booths and information tables will have gift cards and goodie bags for distribution.

Along with a free lunch of hamburgers and hot dogs provided free of charge by FENCE, there will also be classic cars, inflatable slides and bounce houses for children, as well as games, popcorn and cotton candy. The Basement Bunch will be on-site to provide live music, and there will also be a performance from Sizemore Gymnastics of Tryon.

The anniversary celebration will be held at FENCE, located at 3381 Hunting Country Rd. in Tryon, from noon to 4 p.m. The event is free for the community to enjoy. For more information, visit fence.org.
