Landrum Boys and Girls compete in 24th Battle at the Border Tournament

LANDRUM—The Landrum Boys and Girls varsity basketball teams competed against North and South Carolina schools in the 24th Battle at the Border Tournament hosted by Landrum High School over the weekend.
The Landrum Boys clinched their fifth Battle at the Border title with three impressive wins. The Cards started the tournament with a 78-33 victory against Spartanburg Christian Academy (0-10). Junior Bennett Edwards led the team with 15 points, followed by Senior EJ Jackson with 11 points.
In their next game, the Cardinals avenged their early season two-point loss to Broome (5-8) with a 68-46 win. They then defeated Woodruff (9-5) 66-57 in the finals, thanks to 22 points from Franklin Davis and 17 from AJ Lindsey. Franklin Davis was named the tournament MVP, while Edwards and Lindsey were both named to the All-Tournament team.
The Lady Cards were named tournament runner-ups, making it all the way to the finals. They opened the tournament with a 57-38 win against Boiling Springs (6-9) for a second time this season. Senior Kaylee Cortez led the team with 17 points, followed by fellow Senior Savannah Brown, who added 15.
Landrum then beat St. Joseph’s (9-6) in the second round 70-60 behind 27 points from Sophomore Kylie Fortner and 21 points from Cortez. Only to face a tough matchup in the finals, where they lost 62-41 to Gaffney (8-4). Fortner, Brown, and Cortez from Landrum were all named to the all-tournament team.
The Lady Cardinals (11-2) will play their next game on Wednesday, January 3 at Broome High School at 7 p.m. before returning home to play Liberty (2-12) at 6:15 p.m. on Friday, January 5. The Cardinals (12-4) will open region play at home versus Liberty (7-8) on Friday, January 5 at 7:45 p.m. after the Lady Cardinals game.
