FOOTBALL: Landrum gets clipped by Liberty on road

On Thursday night, the Landrum Cardinals (4-5,0-4) failed to hold onto a first-half lead, losing 40-33 on the road versus the Liberty Red Devils (6-2,2-2).
The Red Devils got on the board first with a 1-yard touchdown run. Landrum would respond early in the second quarter with a Colton Link 5-yard touchdown run followed by a missed extra point for a 6-6 tie score.
Liberty later missed a field goal, giving the Cardinals the ball at their own 18-yard line with three minutes to go. The Cards took the ball 82 yards, and Titus Poore scored a touchdown and a two-point conversion to give the Cards a 14-6 halftime lead.
Landrum would kick off to Liberty, who would score on their opening drive of the second half and miss the extra point to make it 14-12. Colton Link added his second touchdown, a 17-yard scamper. Another missed extra point would make 20-12. Liberty tied the game late in the 3rd quarter and then came out on top in a fourth-quarter shootout for a final score of 40-33.
The Cardinals finished with 58 yards passing, 301 yards rushing and no turnovers. A majority of the rushing total was provided by Colton Link, who had 187 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Liberty totaled 441 yards.
The Cardinals wrap up the regular season Friday with a home matchup versus the Blacksburg Wildcats (3-6, 0-4). The weather for next week’s game is predicted to be clear and in the high 60s.
