The Abbeville Panthers (7-1, 3-0) cruised to a 56-0 victory over the Landrum Cardinals (4-4, 0-3) on Friday night at Cardinal Stadium.
The Panthers, currently ranked the second-best team in South Carolina 2A, dominated the Cardinals throughout the game. Abbeville quickly jumped to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and built a commanding 34-0 halftime lead, taking advantage of turnovers and negative plays by the Cardinals, while Landrum was unable to take advantage of good starting field position time and again.
Although Landrum played better in the second half, they still struggled to contain Abbeville’s big play ability. The Panthers would add three more touchdowns and a two-point conversion in the second half to seal the 56-0 victory. A missed 41-yard field goal in the fourth quarter would be the Cardinal’s last chance to get on the board and end the shutout.
The Panthers will continue their quest for another state championship. Last year’s title moved them into a tie for second in overall championships with Gaffney at 12, placing them only behind Summerville’s 17 for the most all-time. Abbeville coach Jamie Nickels also picked up his eighth state championship.
The game will serve as motivation for the Cardinals, who will look to bounce back against the Liberty Red Devils (5-3, 1-2) next Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Cardinals are still looking for their first Region win of the season. The weather for the game is predicted to be in the high sixties with a 60% chance of precipitation.
