GREEN CREEK—Catherine L. Dawson of Green Creek, gained her Heavenly wings Thursday morning, September 28, 2023.

Born in Wilmington, North Carolina, Catherine was the daughter of the late Heinrich and Marie von der Lieth. Her father owned a store in Wilmington called Henry’s Central News where young Catherine and her older brother, Henry worked in the family business. A gifted musician, she earned a music scholarship and after graduating from New Hanover High School, Catherine attended East Carolina University for two years earning a secretarial degree. She then worked for the Army for several years in Sunny Point before accepting a job with the Social Security Administration from which she retired in 1990 after 34 years of service.

In 1969, she married Donald Dawson. They moved to Upstate New York where they ran a dairy farm. Catherine would wake up at 3 a.m. to help with the morning milking before getting her daughter ready for school and heading to work. In 1981, Don and Catherine moved back to North Carolina, settling in Polk County where they owned and operated Double D Farm Supply and worked a beef cattle farm.

Catherine loved crafting, all things nature offered and attending Bible study. She volunteered at the Polk County Library, The Thrift Barn and Hospice House. She was a person of deep faith and a dedicated servant of the Lord. She attended Trinity Lutheran Church in Tryon.

Catherine was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Dawson, her parents Heinrich and Marie von der Lieth and her brother, Henry J.G. von der Lieth.

Left to cherish her memories are one daughter, Donna Hall (Kenny) and their daughters, Kendall and Kristen, her son, Donald Dawson (Lynn) and their children, Phillip, Cory and Lori.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 30, 2023 in Polk Memorial Gardens with Pastor Tom Olson officiating.

Memorials may be made to Upstate Community Hospice House, 260 Fairwinds Drive, Landrum, South Carolina 29356.
