The first Dog Mayor was elected in 2019, with the honor surprisingly enough going to a cat, Rusty Bunshine. In 2022, the late Judy Booty won the election. September’s election promises a brand new lineup of fresh candidates for office.

Votes are $1 each, with all proceeds going to local animal rescue organizations, such as the Foothills Humane Society and Paws, Prayers and Promises. Votes may be cast online at any time or in person at the Tryon Dog Mayor event.

Candidates may be submitted and votes can be cast online at www.tryondogmayor.com. All are welcome to submit their pooch for consideration for Tryon’s top dog. There are currently four canine candidates. Those in the running include Toby, a mixed breed, Birch the Jack Russell Terrier, Clyde the Goberian and this writer’s own plucky Staffordshire Terrier, Persephone.

Election night for Tryon Dog Mayor will be held on Friday, September 22, from 5 to 7 p.m. in conjunction with September’s Fourth Friday. Voting closes at 7 p.m.

Additional details are available at the Tryon Dog Mayor website or by contacting downtowndirector@tryonnc.gov.
