Susan (Lib) Jack Burnett, 86, died July 30, 2023, at Atrium Health – Carolinas Medical Center. She was born on July 15, 1937, in Rutherford County, NC, the daughter of Hugh L. and Nell (McBrayer) Jack.
Susan graduated from Mill Spring Hill School (NC) in 1955, where she was an acclaimed basketball player, receiving many awards and honors. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Appalachian State Teachers College in 1959 and went on to teach in Florida, Texas, and South Carolina, retiring from Spartanburg County School District 6 in 2001. Children were her life’s work and greatest joy, but none more so than her 2 grandchildren. She loved attending their events and activities and playing board games with them after school.
Susan was an avid reader and enjoyed playing the piano, doing word puzzles, and watching sports on TV. She was also a decades-long subscriber to Sports Illustrated magazine and read the newspaper every morning, although she frequently lamented about how thin the paper had become these days.
Susan is survived by her daughter Melanie (Burnett) Miller and son-in-law Keith Miller of Indian Trail, NC; 2 grandchildren, Zach Miller and Kate Miller; sister Rachel Ramsey of Columbus, NC; several beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded by her husband Capt. Roy Glenn Burnett (USAF); brother Roy Jack, and parents.
A memorial for family and friends will be held at a later date in Tryon, NC. Those who wish to remember Susan in a special way may make gifts in her memory to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758516, Topeka, KS, 666715-8516, or to their local Humane Society.
