Columbus– Violet Reba Weiss nee Calloway was born May 14, 1930, in Foscoe, North Carolina. She entered eternal life and joined her late husband, Josef, on Wednesday, July 19th, 2023 in Columbus, NC, after a brief illness and a life of adventure.
Violet pursued teaching shortly after graduating from high school and received a bachelor’s degree in education from Southern Adventist University. In her nearly five-decade career, she rose through the ranks from teacher to school superintendent while receiving a master’s degree in early childhood education from The University of Miami. In December of 1997, she defended her thesis, “Perspectives of Ten Women School Superintendents on their Working World,” and received her Doctorate of Education from The University of Georgia.
On December 26th, 1956, she married the love of her life, Josef Gene Weiss, the father of one of her second-grade students. Together they would raise their three children: Diane, Josef Jr., and Bruce. Throughout their marriage, Josef and Violet traveled the world–seeing all 7 continents and bringing home the memories to share through descriptive stories of their adventures or scrapbooks.
She is survived by her sister, Marbeth; three children, Diane Steinhurst, Josef Weiss Jr., and Bruce Weiss; ten grandchildren; and many close friends and family members. Violet’s family would like to extend their deepest thanks to those who cared for Violet in her last days: the staff of Ridge Rest Assisted Living Center, Lisa Krolak, and Melanie Jennings. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Land O’Sky Doll Club of which Violet was a longtime member.
A memorial service will be held Friday, July 28th at 11 am at Tryon Seventh Day Adventists Church 2820 Lynn Rd, Tryon, NC 28782.
