POLK COUNTY—The Polk County Board of Commissioners officially declared July Parks and Recreation Month in Polk County on Monday.
Polk County Recreation Coordinator Laura Baird read a presentation to the board requesting a proclamation to use the month to honor Polk’s Parks and Recreation efforts and facilities.
“Parks and recreation is an integral part of communities throughout this country, including Polk County,” said Baird. “Parks and Recreation promotes health and wellness, improving the physical and mental health of people who live near parks.”
Baird stated that Parks and Recreation promotes time spent in nature and positive mental health, while also increasing cognitive performance and wellbeing. It also alleviates illnesses such as depression, attention deficit disorders and Alzheimer’s, she said.
Other benefits of Parks and Recreation include providing space for popular sports, hiking trails, swimming pools and other activities designed to promote active lifestyles.
The United States House of Representatives designated July Parks and Recreation Month in 2009. The Polk County Board of Commissioners passed the proclamation unanimously.
