Flat Rock– Kay Foster Cox Burgess, 76, of Flat Rock, passed away Thursday morning, July 20, 2023, at Carolina Reserve.
Kay was born in Polk County to parents Julian and Arbutus Skipper Foster. She graduated from Polk Central High School in 1965. She married Kenneth Cox and moved to Hendersonville. Kay retired after 30 years of service to the Henderson County School System, working at both Tuxedo and Upward Elementary.
Kay was widowed in 1998 and later married Wayne Burgess of Mill Spring and moved back to Polk County where she lived for several years. After being widowed a second time, she moved back to her former home in Hendersonville where she spent several years in retirement, enjoying gardening, spending time with family, and worshiping her savior, Jesus Christ.
Kay was a member of Dana Baptist, and Coopers Gap Baptist, and regularly attended Gethsemane Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents and husbands, Kay was preceded in death by her brother, Jay Foster of Columbus.
Surviving are her sisters Jane Foster Jackson (Rick) and Arlene Foster Young of Green Creek, son Tracey Cox (Sherry), daughter Marla Cox Mabry (James), granddaughter Sara Mabry, all of Hendersonville, nephews Brent Jackson, Travis Jackson (Jessie), and Heath Merrill, step-grandchildren Jack Smith (Shanda) and Tracy Carpenter (Steve), and step-great-grandchildren Benjamin Davis, Blake Smith, Miranda Wilson, and Nick, Morgan, and Will Carpenter.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, July 23, 2023, in the McFarland Funeral Chapel with Reverend Donald Hollifield officiating.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. at the funeral chapel.
