The recent Regional Bridge Tournament, held in Greenville, SC, attracted almost 1,000 competitors, some from as far away as Ontario, and players from the Foothills Duplicate Bridge Club of Tryon scored quite well there.
Here’s a list of the top Foothills performers:
George Russell — 36.72 masterpoints
Nancy Russell — 36.72 masterpoints
Flora van Dijck — 28.53 masterpoints
Andrea Kahn — 24.57 masterpoints
Lisa Shelton — 22.46 masterpoints
Laura Spinks — 22.46 masterpoints
Mary Elder — 22.16 masterpoints
Jane Eden — 19.82 masterpoints
John Kennedy — 19.82 masterpoints
Each of the above players was part of a team or pair that won at least one event outright — no easy feat in such a fiercely competitive tournament.
Other big scorers were Chip Boyle with 18.58 masterpoints Mickey Brandstadter with 15.21 masterpoints and Dianne Moore with 15.21 masterpoints.
Also earning masterpoints were: Beverly Abrams, Dianne Cornett, Jean Case, Anita Cathcart, Gordy Cwik, Karen Doddridge, Carollee Hayward, Bill McCartha, Vicki McCartha, Sandra Parker, Elizabeth Refshauge, Linda Sherer, Chris ter Kuile, Robbie ter Kuile, Ace Vargo and Brenda Verdell.
Altogether, Foothills players earned more than 300 masterpoints in the tournament, which ran from June 11-16.
The Foothills Club hosts three sanctioned duplicate bridge games per week at the Tryon Congregational Church, located at 210 Melrose Ave. in Tryon. There are two games on Thursday, at 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The Friday game starts at 9:30 a.m. and is preceded by a strategy discussion at 9 a.m.
