Concert part of Tryon Fine Arts Center’s Amphitheater Series

 

TRYON–The Asheville-based group Queen Bee and the Honeylovers will bring their blend of classic swing, blues and Latin music to the Tryon Fine Arts Center as a part of its Amphitheater Series on Thursday, June 1. Band leader and singer Whitney Moore says she was born and raised in Asheville by parents who were musicians.

“As early as I can remember I was on stage singing and acting,” says Moore. “I was a performer in the family business. I came by it naturally.”

Moore started on the piano and picked up violin, clarinet and guitar growing up. She started playing professionally with her parents as a teenager, then lived in Spain, Mexico, Canada, California and Nashville studying music and training with master musicians.

“I decided to put my own band together and at the time we had chickens and a big garden and we were about to get bees,” says Moore who remembers a friend telling her he was a honey lover. “I said that’s a cute name for a band, the honey lovers, and my husband said well you have to be the queen bee.”

The band plays mostly classic jazz swing music inspired by the music Moore’s grandparents listened to in the ‘20s, ‘30s and ‘40s.

“One of my biggest visions for our music is that it is uplifting and joyful and brings generations together,” says Moore.

Moore will be joined by Andrew Finn Magill on violin, Cynthia McDermott on mandolin, Mattick Frick on guitar and Trevor Stoia on upright bass.
