Polk County– Mr. Garside passed away peacefully on May 10, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Earl and Virginia “Honey” Garside. He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Frances F. Garside of Landrum, SC; a sister, Nancy Jo Davenport (Jim) of Baltimore, MD; two sons, Brian (Ramita) and David Garside of Chicago, IL; a daughter, Laurie Womer (Kevin) of Denver, CO; and five grandchildren, Clark, Emma, and Janet of Northbrook, IL and Allison and Ellie Womer of Denver, CO.
Gary was born in 1944 in Chicago. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Ohio University, an MBA from Golden Gate University, and JD while attending law school at both Golden Gate University and the University of California at Berkeley. During law school, he worked for Eli, Lilly, and Company.
Gary was a prominent attorney in Chicago. He enjoyed coaching youth hockey, soccer, and baseball, and he loved scuba diving and boating on Lake Geneva in Wisconsin.
Later in life he moved to Polk County, NC, served on the county planning board, and became a co-owner of the Down to Earth Garden Center in Tryon. He also loved Horses and was a member of both the Green Creek and Greenville County Hounds.
A private celebration of life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to a charity of your choice.
