Landrum– Lynn Evans Malak, a loving wife, amazing mother, treasured “Nana,” and best friend to many, passed away Saturday, March 18th, 2023, at her beautiful mountain home at the Cliffs of Glassy surrounded by family. To know Lynn was to be touched by her warmth, delicious cooking, thoughtful friendship, and deep faith. Lynn always made time to help a person in need, care for a sick friend, or surprise someone with a home-cooked meal. Her cheerfulness and contagious laughter always left her friends and acquaintances grateful for having shared time with her. Lynn rarely talked about faith, love, or friendship; she lived it. To know her was to love her.

Lynn was born in Warrick, RI, on April 23rd, 1940, to Pearl LaVoice and Dr. Leonard Evans. She graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a degree in Home Economics and earned her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education at the University of Illinois. Lynn was a gifted teacher and tremendously impacted the lives of the students she taught at Glendale Heights Elementary and later St. Monica Catholic Elementary.

On August 4th, 1962, she married Francis David Malak. This past year, the couple celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. If you knew Lynn, you certainly knew about her family, who she so deeply loved and was remarkably proud of. She is survived by son David and Melody Malak of Martinsville, IN, son Dr. Darryl and Beth Malak of Charlotte, NC, and daughter Lesley and Brett Hargrave of Carmel, IN. Her six grandchildren delighted Lynn, and they will miss her greatly: Jay, Mitchell, Emma Malak, Madison, Owen, and Drew Hargrave. Each wore the beautiful christening gown Lynn made by hand, beginning their lives guided by her love and faith. She is also survived by her brother, Dr. Martin Evans, and her devoted husband, Dave Malak, who cared lovingly for Lynn in her final days.

Lynn generously gave her time as a faithful member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Tryon, NC. In addition, she served as a coordinator for the Cliffs CRO meals program and tutored in local elementary schools. Lynn also volunteered actively in the annual kids camp at the Cliffs, where her grandchildren cherished the mountain adventures shared with their Nana and Pap.

A funeral mass will be held to honor Lynn at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Tryon, NC, on April 1st, 2023, at 10 am: 180 Laurel Ave, Tryon, NC 28782. Following the service, the family will receive friends at the church.

Memorials in Lynn’s name can be directed to St. Joseph College Seminary Scholarship Fund: 22 Arctus Ave, Mt Holly, NC 28120.
