A new gravel parking lot can now be found at the Melrose Mountain Climbing Park on Hogback Mtn Road (at the intersection with Graham’s View) thanks to gravel provided by the Town of Tryon and gratis mechanical grading provided by Greg Junge Construction, LLC. Park development is on-going, and it includes trail improvements and construction of a trail kiosk and picnic area. 

To join in the camaraderie, come out this Saturday, November 26, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for another volunteer trail building day, led by Blue Ridge Adventure Guides and Carolina Climbers Coalition, to construct staircases out of locust logs. 

Melrose Mountain Climbing Park was established in 2019, and since then it has provided rock-climbing opportunities for beginner to advanced rock climbers, several WNC and Upstate SC school/university groups, and various other outdoor leadership programs (e.g. Boy Scouts) in the southeast. 

By descending a short 15-minute hike from the parking area to the cliff base, visitors can easily access 40 established sport climbs on the edge of the Blue Ridge Escarpment where there’s beautiful cliff-side views down to the SC Piedmont and of Hogback Mtn.  

This Town of Tryon park was co-developed and is maintained through support provided by Blue Ridge Adventure Guides (Brag – a local outdoor club), the Carolina Climber’s Coalition C4 Team, the Tryon Fire Department, and thousands of volunteer man hours devoted to building approach trails and developing climbing routes.
