The Foothills Music Club met Thursday, November 10, at Tryon First Baptist Church. The program theme was music from The Great American Songbook. Members were able to reminisce as they listened to old standards such as: “Over the Rainbow,” played on melodica with piano accompaniment; “Someone to Watch Over Me” by George and Ira Gershwin and “One Hand, One Heart” from West Side Story, both performed vocally;  a ragtime piano version of “Oh! You Beautiful Doll”;  and a medley of state songs including “Stars Fell on Alabama,” “Georgia on My Mind,” and “Carolina in the Morning,” sung and played on classical guitar. The program ended with the nostalgic “I’ll  Be Seeing You,” performed by the FMC women’s vocal ensemble.

The purpose of the Foothills Music Club is to encourage musicians in their art and to provide scholarships for young musicians in the area. Plans are already being made for the 2023 scholarship auditions which will be held in early March. High school students who attend a school or reside in Polk or Rutherford County or Landrum, SC are eligible to apply. More information about the scholarship program can be obtained from Jeanette Shackelford,
