Sam “Magic Man” Waymon to make guest appearance
On Saturday, April 30, a Nina Simone tribute concert will be held at Rogers Park located at 55 West Howard Street in Tryon. The event will be free, although donations are encouraged.
Many musical performers will be taking center stage in celebrating the life and legacy of Tryon’s own Nina Simone. The lineup includes Drea D’Nur, Ol’ 74 Jazz Band, Paul “Fingerstyle” Bowman, Jasme Kelly, Daryle Ryce and Zendetta.
Additionally, Nina Simone’s brother, Sam “Magic Man” Waymon will be attending the event as a special musical guest. Sam Waymon served as music director for some of Nina Simone’s music and accepted on her behalf when she was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.
Sam Waymon is an award winning composer, musician, singer and pianist, and has composed music for Broadway.
There are a host of businesses and groups supporting the event including the Town of Tryon, the Wilcox on Melrose, Touring Logistics, Piano Emporium, Biscuit & Brew, Tryon Fine Arts Center, Tryon International Equestrian Center, Blue Ridge Music Trails of North Carolina and Blue Ridge National Heritage Area. New View Realty will be serving as the presenting corporate sponsor. The event will feature Andrew Fletcher as emcee.
The concert will begin at 7 p.m. In the event of rain, the concert will be held at the Tryon Fine Arts Center.
