Thank you for your column in the Tryon Daily Bulletin regarding balloon releases. I have shared your concerns for many years. While I understand the sentiments associated with a balloon release, the bottom line is it is organized littering. You cannot hike anywhere these days without running across a deflated balloon, usually with some ribbon attached. Not only is it unsightly, it is not safe for wildlife. Whenever I have been part of a group that wanted to have a balloon release, I have suggested a butterfly release instead. While my suggestions are usually not met with great enthusiasm, I have seen butterfly releases done at some events and they are lovely alternatives to balloons. Hopefully, more people will consider butterflies in the future. I always enjoy your articles. Thank you for your insight.
