You know Tryon Painters and Sculptors for their new show receptions; for a glass of wine on Fourth Fridays; for members’ amazing art on the large walls of the gallery; for the unique one-of-a-kind gifts in their gift shop and for their excellent art classes. These are exciting times at TPS. They are adding qualified instructors as well as a broadened choice of artistic endeavors.  

Many folks in the community have taken classes from Vicki Van Vynckt, Susan Ruby and Ann Gleason. Vicki is a popular instructor in oils where she offers a 6-week class welcoming you to explore landscape, abstraction or anything in between.  She is there to give you help with drawing, composition, color mixing and various oil techniques.

Susan Ruby has been teaching at TPS for quite some time and has a loyal following. Her “Someday I’ll Take Art” class is for all levels and focuses on drawing and painting from concept to finish. Susan and Vicki show their art at TPS, as well as other venues.

TPS is rebuilding its clay studio classes, with veteran Ann Gleason leading the charge.  Ann is best known for her delightful sculptured animals. Her hands-on (no pun intended) approach allows the student to see the final art appear before their eyes. Joining Ann this year is Janet Leazenby, who delights in helping the students put “life into their clay.”  She constructs sculptures by the way of slab, dugout, additive and subtractive methods. 

Marcia Rieff, Hendersonville artist, teaches classes offering drawing and watercolor instruction. “Let’s Begin with Drawing” will teach you the basics of drawing by showing you how to create the illusion of 3 dimensional objects in space. By using shading to create the illusion of light, volume and distance, you will learn about the system of perspective. She will also teach “For the Love of Watercolor” for beginners to intermediates. 

Also, TPS are happy to introduce watercolorist Pat Morgan to their program. Pat now lives in WNC, and is offering The 2-Day Workshop Series at TPS.  For intermediate and advanced levels, this series can be taken as an individual session or all six. The subject of the session changes each week. Pat’s passion for watercolor is matched only by her passion for teaching. Her personal teaching style is informative, relaxed and supportive. 

Finally, Tryon Painters and Sculptors now offers its first 4-Day Workshop with well-known Charleston artist Larry Moore. Moore has developed a teaching method based on 50 years of experience as an illustrator, graphic designer and fine artist – and he has extensive knowledge of art history and 30 years of teaching experience. And what better venue to hold this workshop than the beautiful Tryon International Equestrian Center? You can either commute each day to class, or rent one of the rooms or cabins for your stay. Of course, there are many restaurants to choose from while painting at TIEC. All of this has been arranged and is sponsored by Tryon Painters and Sculptors. During this time spent with Moore you will learn to think for yourself, find your voice as an artist, push your boundaries and enhance your thought process while expanding your painting vocabulary. All skill levels are welcome. This workshop will be challenging for all artists, and is set for  April 4-7, 2022, 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day.
