Biggest storm in several years expected on Sunday

FOOTHILLS—As many area residents are battling sickness this week, they are also preparing for what could be the biggest winter storm in decades. 

The Town of Tryon sent out a notice Friday morning that town and county staff have been preparing for the upcoming weather that is expected to bring up to 14 inches of snow in the region as well as ice and freezing rain. 

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch on Thursday for the upcoming storm that is expected to begin Saturday evening and continue through Sunday. 

Tryon officials said Friday morning that higher elevations, such as Saluda, Hogback Mountain, Melrose Mountain and other area peaks could see as much as 24 inches of snow. 

“Tryon Fire, Police, Public Works and Communications have prepared equipment, added additional staff and prepared emergency vehicles for response; however, the Town of Tryon asks that you do not travel at any time on Sunday, Jan. 16 unless absolutely necessary,” stated the town’s notice. 

Tryon residents can reach assistance at 828-859-9195 through the police department and additional emergency response teams will be staffed throughout the county with options for emergency transportation and shelter if necessary. 

“Because freezing rain, ice and snow is expected as early as Saturday evening, the Town of Tryon asks that you make early preparations for this weekend, and remain vigilant regarding the probability of power loss, falling trees, limited provisions and impossible travel conditions,” Town of Tryon officials said.
