Columbus – Betty Murray. You say those two words together….and you can’t help but think of her smile, her enthusiasm, her effervescent personality, her thoughtfulness and the love of her matching outfits…..from head to toe! She managed her passing…as she managed her life…. with grace, dignity and love. Betty Murray passed away on November 12th just a few weeks after her 90th birthday.
Prior to coming to North Carolina, Betty lived on Long Island for 60+ years…Great Neck where she was raised and Stony Brook where she raised her family. She defined the term “working mom” and “multi-task” when it wasn’t in vogue. Mom, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother, hostess, friend and career… she did it all.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Bob….and her daughters Stephanie, Marilyn and Lisa her brother George…and a loving family that brought her joy and happiness every single day…sons-in-laws…. Paul and Sergio… grandchildren and their loved ones, Spencer and Michelle, Patrick and Colin, Jake, Izzy and Nick and Caroline…nephews and nieces throughout the world and her beautiful brand-new great granddaughter, Penny. She was truly the matriarch of the family.
Betty Murray is also survived by the wonderful friendships of Columbus and Tryon…that made every day ….truly special. Her dear bestest friends Nancy Jane, Margaret, Liz and Rina…with fabulous years of lunches and laughter, wine and bridge….to Chris and the lovely people at the Polk County Public Library and St. Luke’s where she both volunteered, to the folks at Tryon Country Club back in the day where she was President (one of only two female presidents at the time!), to Ben and Donna who were always happy to see her at CVS , to Patricia who insured the Sunday paper was ready for her, to Sean who never thought she was silly to be at the airport four hours early, to Miguel who took care of her car, to Lorraine and all the lovely people at Dr. Carey’s office who were always happy to see her, to the folks at the Post Office who always talked to her about why those packages were so special, to Jennings who would do anything to keep the house in working order and her calm, to Brenda who always kept her looking great and to her wonderful neighbors who helped in times of need or simply to say hello. She always said….everyone is just so nice and are my friends.
Betty Murray. Heaven will be a better (and much more organized!) place with her in it…. she certainly made it a better world for us. We will all miss her so very, very much.
